Background

Globally, 55 million people suffer from dementia. In Germany, two-thirds of patients receive home care, yet effective solutions for medication management remain lacking.

Approach

Conducted field research in two daycare facilities, observing dementia patients’ daily behaviors and reflecting these insights in every detail of the product design.

Since many patients either do not acknowledge or are unaware of their condition, held focus groups with caregivers to gain a more practical understanding of patient care needs.

Applied user-centered design to create an intuitive interaction system, reinforcing time orientation and supporting independent medication intake.

Highlights

A Key Pain Point
Research revealed that dementia patients often struggle with time perception, finding it difficult to distinguish the current date or whether it is morning or afternoon. As a result, the calendar became the core of the product design, integrating seamlessly with medication reminders and interaction prompts.

To align with the daily habits of elderly users and conserve energy, an e-ink display was used to mimic the visual effect of a newspaper.
